The
American Bobtail is a domestic cat, but it is special, partly because
of its exotic appearance and partly because of its unique personality.
Coloring varies widely, but other physical characteristics include
short tails; medium to large muscular bodies (some males grow to 25
pounds!); and often "ear tips," "mutton chops" or
"thumb prints," which make them look a little like wild bobcats.

As
a recognized breed, the American Bobtail traces its roots to a male
bobtail tabby kitten found in the late 1960's on an Arizona Indian Reservation.
He was adopted by a young couple and eventually bred with their long-tailed
female. The resulting offspring were born with short tails and other
unique traits which are now hallmarks of the American Bobtail breed.

Although
prized for their "wild" looks, pedigreed American Bobtails
are strictly domestic pets. Their high intelligence makes them easy
to train; and because they are so loyal, playful, and intensely affectionate,
these lovable felines are often described as having "dog-like"
personalities (they can even be leash-trained!). To be adopted by one
is a truly gratifying experience!!
